Trump Confirms Indirect Role in US-Iran Nuclear Negotiations in Geneva
Speaking to journalists on Monday while traveling back to Washington, Trump addressed expectations surrounding the second round of indirect negotiations. "I'll be involved in those talks indirectly, and they'll be very important," he said. He offered a cautious outlook on the outcome, adding, "We'll see what can happen."
Based on the outlined timetable, the negotiations are due to start Tuesday morning. Oman is facilitating the dialogue, and the meeting will be held at the Omani Embassy in Geneva, Switzerland.
Trump characterized Iran as "a very tough" negotiator but criticized its approach. "But I would say they are bad negotiators, as we could have had a deal instead of sending out B-2s to knock out their nuclear potential. We had to send the B-2s. I hope they are going to be more reasonable," he stated, referencing the deployment of US stealth bombers during heightened hostilities between Iran and Israel in June 2025, when Iranian nuclear facilities were targeted.
The president repeated his belief that Tehran is interested in reaching an agreement. "I don't think they want the consequences of not making a deal. They want to make a deal," he said.
Indirect diplomatic engagement between Washington and Tehran resumed on Feb. 6 in Muscat, under Omani mediation, after being paused for nearly eight months. The earlier suspension followed an Israeli strike on Iran that led to a 12-day conflict.
According to reports, both parties described the most recent round of talks in favorable terms.
The discussions unfolded amid rising strain in the region, particularly as the United States increased its military presence in the Persian Gulf.
