US Naval Blockade Halts Iran’s Maritime Trade
(MENAFN) U.S. military authorities have “completely halted” sea-based commerce to and from Iran, according to the head of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), as an ongoing naval blockade takes effect.
"In less than 36 hours since the blockade was implemented, U.S. forces have completely halted economic trade going into and out of Iran by sea," Adm. Brad Cooper stated in an official announcement.
These comments followed the initiation on Monday of a sweeping blockade by CENTCOM targeting all vessels traveling to and from Iranian harbors.
The command, tasked with overseeing American military activities across the Middle East, emphasized that the blockade is being "enforced impartially against vessels of all nations" accessing or departing Iranian ports in both the Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.
"CENTCOM forces will not impede freedom of navigation for vessels transiting the Strait of Hormuz to and from non-Iranian ports," the statement added.
This maritime restriction came after uncommon face-to-face discussions between the United States and Iran in Pakistan over the weekend, which were intended to bring an end to the conflict that erupted on Feb. 28; however, the talks concluded without reaching any deal.
